In a touching display of friendship and solidarity, more than 50 students from Yilong Middle School in Sichuan, China, walked over two kilometres with their teachers on May 17, 2025 to visit their gravely ill classmate, 15-year-old Ren Junjie, at Yilong People’s Hospital. Ren, who was battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma, had been bedridden and unable to attend school due to his treatment.

When a teacher suggested taking a special graduation photo with him, his classmates enthusiastically agreed. Several students went into his hospital ward, helped him put on the school uniform, and wheeled him to the hospital garden on his bed. Surrounded by his friends, Ren posed for what many called “the most special graduation photo in the world.”

The students also presented Ren with letters full of encouragement and gifts, including a basketball signed by the entire class. Messages like “I admire your courage” and “Get well soon, play computer games with us” reflected the deep bonds he shared with his classmates.

A family member shared the photos and gifts on social media, thanking the students and teachers for their love and care, and wishing them success in their upcoming exams.
Tragically, Ren passed away at 4 a.m. the following day, just one month before his 16th birthday.

His classmates’ actions, however, left a lasting memory of love, courage, and compassion that has moved millions across China and beyond.
